War and Peace

I recently visited the Martin-Mullen Art Gallery on the campus of Oneonta State this past week. The exhibit is titled Uri Shulevitz: War and Peace and has been on display since September 8th. Many of the works included canvas paintings, wood figures that were painted and sculpture pieces. Most of the work presented had some type of acrylic paint in the composition. Pieces of the art work that captured my attention most was the large canvas sheets that hung on the wall and then the wooden sculptured that stood in front of the canvas. These two different materials worked really well together to show color contrast and shows on the canvas.
However, although many of his works were wooden and painted, they were not the ones to catch my eye the most. I was fascinated by one particular painting that used acrylics, titled Landscape III. The unity of the painting is held together really well and I actually need to step back and look at it because the colors really bring everything together. As I stood close I could see the somewhat shape of mountains and trees but I wasn't really getting the impression that I was hoping for. However as I stood back I could see how the choices of color and the brush strokes really created the mountains and the trees. The value of the painting is light, in the mountains and the sky. The artist uses long brush strokes and light pastel colors to give the impression of a sunset. The tree line created with more low-key colors, like greens, blues and reds. Complementary colors are not widely used in this painting and that really does something to the viewer. Gives a more direct color pallet but also helps the colors in the sky and mountains really blend well together. I really enjoyed this piece and the other works of art that were presented in this exhibition.
